CANYON CITY — A man accused of sexually abusing a minor and distributing images of the abuse is facing a raft of new charges after a second indictment was filed in the case.
In early November, Christopher Lee Gibson, 45, of John Day, was arrested and arraigned on a 30-count grand jury indictment in Grant County Circuit Court.
Last Thursday, May 9, he was arraigned on an amended indictment and now faces 62 criminal charges.
Specifically, Gibson is charged with 18 counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, 18 counts of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree, eight counts of third-degree sexual abuse, eight counts of third-degree sodomy, two counts of luring a minor and one count each of harassment, online sexual corruption of a child and possession of materials depicting the sexually explicit conduct of a child.
Forty-eight of the charges are felonies. The most serious are the 18 counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, a measure 11 offense that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison on conviction.
All of the charges involve the same alleged victim, a boy under the age of 16. Prosecutors allege the crimes occurred between August and October of last year.
Gibson is being held on $100,000 bail in the Grant County Jail.
In a related case involving the same victim, Timothy Christopher Leffner, 35, of John Day, was indicted in November on one felony count of third-degree sodomy, one misdemeanor count of third-degree sexual abuse and one misdemeanor count of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.
Neither man has entered a plea to the charges against them.
The two cases were consolidated at the request of prosecutors, meaning both men will be tried together.
A pretrial settlement conference set for Friday, May 17, has been canceled, according to court records.
The next court appearance on the docket for Gibson and Leffner is a plea hearing scheduled for Aug. 30. A two-week jury trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 12 in Grant County Circuit Court.
Defense attorneys Mark Claramunt, representing Gibson, and John D. Lamborn, representing Leffner, both declined to comment on the case.
