The Grant Union boys and girls and Prairie City boys earned top three finishes at the Prairie City Track Meet on Friday, April 5, in Prairie City.

The home meet was the first of two that Grant County track teams will host this season and included squads from Joseph, Mitchell/Spray/Wheeler, Sherman and Huntington in addition to the Grant County schools. In total, eight teams competed in both the boys and girls competitions.

Visiting Joseph came away with team wins on both the boys and girls side. The Joseph boys finished with 164.5 team points, with Prairie City in second with 108. The Joseph girls racked up 202 team points to finish ahead of second place Grant Union’s 95 team point total.

The Grant Union boys placed third with 85.5 points, and the Prairie City girls finished fifth with 47 team points. Among the smaller Grant County schools, Monument finished seventh in the girls competition and eighth in the boys competition while Long Creek finished seventh in the boys competition while not scoring any points in the girls competition.

Prairie City picked up three of the top four finishes in the boys 100 meter dash, with senior David Sharpe placing first with a time of 12.24. Junior Maison Teel’s 12.36 was good enough for a second place finish, and Sawyer Quinton finished fourth with a time of 12.54.

The girls 100 meter dash was highlighted by Prairie City’s Brooke Teel, whose fourth place finish in the event was the only top four finish for a Grant County girl competing in the event. Teel logged a 14.86 100 meter time.

The 200 meter dash was much of the same with Maison Teel and Sharpe placing second and third for the Panther boys and Brooke Teel finishing third for the girls. The 400 meter race saw Grant Union pick up its first track victory behind Landon Boyd’s time of 53.73.

Sophomore Ansleigh Douglas logged Monument’s only event win of the meet in the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 2:51.99, a personal record. Junior Eliza Ashley picked up the only victory in a distance race for Grant County schools, wining the 3,000 meters with a time of 16:01.07.

Prairie City’s 4X100 relay team, comprised of David Sharpe, Colby Anderson, Tucker Wright and Maison Teel, would pick up the county’s only relay race victory, logging a time of 46.87 seconds in the event.

Grant County schools performed well in field events as well, with Morgan Walker and Mallory Lusco placing second and third in the shot put. Walker would also record a second place finish in the discus.

Brooke Teel again carried the banner for the Grant County girls, this time finishing in fourth place in the javelin.

The boys field events saw a Grant County competitor finish in the top three in every event except the pole vault. Long Creek senior Pun Leadsuk was the only male competitor to log a high jump of more than 5 feet to win the event handily.

Prairie City’s Tucker Wright crushed the long jump competition, finishing a full 10 inches ahead of the second place finisher. Grant Union’s Skylor Boyd claimed victory in the boys triple jump, besting the second place effort by more than 5 inches.

Grant Union track and field head coach Sonna Smith said she was pleased with her team’s performance despite being shorthanded due to the state Future Business Leaders of America conference.

“I was very happy with our result for those who were able to compete,” she said.

Smith said the team logged personal bests in both distance races and in the girls long and triple jumps, but she is eager to get more meets under the team’s belt.

“I am looking forward to meets with warmer weather and a full team,” she said.
