Lady Panthers back above .500The Prairie City/Burnt River girls basketball team won two of three games over the past week to push their record above .500 as the season draws to a close.
The girls first made the 13-mile trek to John Day on Tuesday, Jan. 30, for an always important showdown with the Lady Prospectors. The Lady Panthers would emerge victorious in the cross-county scuffle, downing the Lady Pros 37-27.
The Lady Panthers would find themselves matched up with another Grant County foe on Friday, Feb. 2, hosting fellow High Desert League members Dayville/Monument. This time the Lady Panthers would cruise, mauling the Lady Tigers 43-11 for their second consecutive win of the week.
The final game of the week was a tall order for the Prairie City/Burnt River girls squad, a visit to top-ranked and unbeaten Crane on Saturday, Feb. 3. This time the Lady Panthers would find themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard as the Lady Mustangs left little doubt as to who the state’s No. 1 class 1A girls basketball team is, dispatching the Lady Panthers 79-17.
The slate of games during the week leave the Lady Panthers at 11-10 on the season with an even 2-2 record in High Desert League play. The Lady Panthers have one more regular season game left on their schedule, a date with Burns on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Burns.
After that game, the team gears up for the High Desert League tournament starting on Thursday, Feb. 15, at Grant Union Jr./Sr. High School.
Tipoff for the Burns game is set for 6 p.m. The High Desert League Tournament will get underway at 7 p.m. with the Lady Panthers’ first opponent still to be determined.
Panther boys lose two of threeThe Prairie City/Burnt River boys basketball team lost two of the three games they played over the past week to fall just below .500 as they prepare for the High Desert League Tournament.
The Panther boys made the trip to John Day on Tuesday, Jan. 30, for a date with familiar foes Grant Union. The Panthers ultimately fell 81-52 to their in-county foes.
The Panthers found themselves at home for their next game, hosting Dayville/Monument on Friday, Feb. 2. The Panthers shook off the Grant Union loss to down the Tigers 65-40 in front of their home crowd.
Like the girls, the Panther boys found themselves faced with the daunting task of dispatching a top-ranked Crane squad on the Mustangs’ home court on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Panthers would ultimately leave Crane the victims of a one-sided, 76-35 loss.
The Panthers ended the week at 10-12 overall with a 3-2 league record. The Panthers have two more games during the regular season, a Tuesday, Feb. 6, contest in Burns and a Saturday, Feb. 10, date with Long Creek.
Following those games, the Panthers will look to put all the work they’ve done in the regular season into practice at the High Desert League Tournament starting on Thursday, Feb. 15, at Grant Union Jr./Sr. High School.
Tipoff for the game against Burns is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the start time for the Long Creek game being 2 p.m. The High Desert League Tournament gets underway at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15, with Prairie City/Burnt River’s opponent to be determined.
Pros go 2-1 during week as postseason loomsThe Grant Union boys basketball team won two games and lost one in action during the past week as the regular season draws to a close.
The Pros dispatched Prairie City/Burnt River 81-52 on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The win was the second of the season for the Pros against their rivals 13 miles up the road.
Up next for the Prospectors was a matchup at Stanfield on Friday, Feb. 2, that saw the Pros looking to even the season series against the Tigers. The Pros would fall 81-51 for their largest margin of defeat on the season and an 0-2 record against the Tigers in 2023-24.
The final game of the week for the Pros was a home, league contest against Weston-McEwen on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Pros would put the performance against Stanfield the day before behind them, downing the Tigerscots 88-72 for their second win in three outings.
The week leaves the 13th-ranked Prospectors at 13-8 on the season with an even 4-4 record in Blue Mountain Conference play. The Pros have two more games left during the regular season, both against Blue Mountain Conference foe Irrigon.
The first will be at Irrigon on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The second game against Irrigon will take place at Grant Union High School on Friday, Feb. 9, and is also scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
Lady Pros drop three straight headed into season’s endThe Grant Union girls basketball team fell in three games this past week to stay stuck at a single win on the season.
The girls took on Prairie City/Burnt River in Prairie City on Tuesday, Jan. 30, playing to one of their slimmest margins of defeat on the year in falling 37-27 to the Lady Panthers. The loss leaves the Lady Prospectors at -0-2 on the season against their foes 13 miles up the road.
The girls found themselves on the road on Friday, Feb. 2, for a league matchup with Stanfield. The Lady Pros would ultimately fall 59-26 in that game, but it was an improvement over the 61-18 result against the same Stanfield team on Saturday, Jan. 20.
The final game of the week for Grant Union was a homestand against Weston-McEwen on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Lady Pros would fall 46-25 in that game, but again, it was an improvement over the 54-15 result against Weston-McEwen from Jan. 22.
The losses leave the Lady Pros at 1-20 on the season and mired in a 19-game losing streak that began on Dec. 5.
Grant Union will have two more opportunities to get another win, both of them conference games against Irrigon.
The first matchup will take place in Irrigon on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. The second will be on Friday, Feb. 9, at Grant Union High School. Tipoff for that game is also scheduled for 6 p.m.
Mountaineers lose one to RattlersThe Long Creek basketball team played one game last week, falling to Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler 78-22 in Long Creek on Friday, Feb. 2. The loss leaves the Mountaineers at 5-9 on the year with an 0-3 record in league play.
The Mountaineers have two more games left during their regular season, a home matchup with Dayville/Monument on Friday, Feb. 9, and a road trip to Prairie City on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Dayville/Monument game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The matchup against Prairie City/Burnt River will get underway at 2 p.m.
