Chiefs DL Chris Jones Poised to Lose Millions Amid Contract Impasse

The Chiefs open the season Thursday night against the Lions, but they will be missing a key piece on defense as Chris Jones remains away from the team. The defensive lineman is entering the final year of his contract and wants a new deal, yet the two sides have not yet come to an agreement.

As a result, Jones is expected to skip Kansas City’s Week 1 game, which will cost him. Jones is currently contracted to earn $19.5 million in salary this season, meaning he will lose $1.083 million per week during the regular season as long as he’s absent from the team.

By missing all of training camp, Jones already has amassed $2.25 million worth of fines. He also missed out on a $500,000 workout bonus.

That means he’ll be out a total of $3.833 million after Week 1.
