Treiva Leu Carter, 50, of Hermiston died Dec. 8 at the family ranch at Long Creek.

She was born March 10, 1952, at Pendleton to William “Benton” and Lorraine Susan (Kelly) Carter. She was raised at Long Creek and graduated from Long Creek High School in 1970. She then attended Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande where she played varsity volleyball and graduated in 1974. She taught school in Long Creek 1974-76 and at Enterprise from 1976-79. She earned her master’s degree from the University of Idaho and taught at Blue Mountain Community College and Armand Larive Middle School, where she coached volleyball and basketball. She also coached volleyball at Stanfield. At Hermiston High School she taught health and physical education from 1982-2002 and refereed volleyball for many years.

She enjoyed sports and loved to watch her son, Luke, play at his games.

Mrs. Carter is survived by son, Lucas Carter-Shuman of Hermiston; sisters and brothers-in-law Reiba and Cliff Smith of Long Creek, Neila and Dave Wallace of Vancouver, Wash., and Neita and Greg Brockway of Estacada; brother and sister-in-law, Patton and Sheila Carter of Long Creek; nieces and nephews, Treisa Granstrom, Treiva Brockway, Travis Brockway, Treina Slatt, Rykeir Smith, Treila Smith, Stephanie Wallace, Theresa Wallace and Chris Wallace; uncle, Jack Kelly of Port Hueneme, Calif.; aunts, Montana Davis of Snohomish, Wash., and Leitha Parsons of The Dalles; seven great-nieces, two great-nephews, and numerous cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Lyle Oren Shuman.

Funeral services were held Dec. 12 at the Hermiston Church of the Nazarene. On Dec. 13, funeral services were held at the Long Creek Community Church. Interment was at Long Creek Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Treiva Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund in Hermiston or to the Benton Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund in Long Creek.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements.
