Shoot to Retrieve event Aug. 24-25 PRAIRIE CITY – Due to the ongoing problem of wildfires in the area and the number of people who are still fighting them, the fourth annual Shoot to Retrieve competition sponsored by the Oregon Bird Hunters Association, originally planned for early this month, has been rescheduled for Aug. 24-25.
Entry fee for the two-day event is $55, which buys the competitors two hunts, one on each day, with three birds in each.
Only the first 20 dog/hunter teams will be accepted, and participants are urged to get their entries in early. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers.
Prior to the competition, the OBHA will provide hunters with a map and a schedule. For event information, call 820-4305. To register, call 820-4627.
PCHS announces sports physicals PRAIRIE CITY – Sports physicals for all Prairie City students in grades 5-12 will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to noon in the old gym.
The cost of the physicals is two cans of canned food per student.
Students must also have their school sports pre-participation examination form signed by a parent or guardian with them at the time of the physical.

Golfers tee off in ladies’ leagues JOHN DAY – The Wednesday Morning Ladies Golf League played “Carlene’s Crazy Points” for low net and low gross over 18 holes on Aug. 7, and Delta Rude came away the big winner scoring 13 points over all flights.
Claudia Hanhi finished second with seven points.
Brenda Densberger was the winner in A flight, with a low net score of 76 and a low gross of 105.
Helen Frazier shot 80 for the low net total in B flight, and Carlene Johnston scored 112 for the low gross total.
Rude won the C flight with a 73 net and a 116 gross, and Hanhi was the D flight winner with a 78 net and a 132 gross.
Annetta Huffman scored a birdie on hole No. 13.
The Wednesday Evening Margarita Ladies also played “Carlene’s Crazy Points” over nine holes, and Lavonna Slinkard was the winner with a 10-point score.
Dorothy Rise and Lanni Strong tied for low net honors in A flight with 39.
Janie Cole was the low net winner in B flight with 36, and Slinkard shot 37 to win C flight.
Donna Edmunson was the winner in D flight with 44.
GU football hits gridiron Aug. 19 JOHN DAY – Official practice for varsity players in the Grant Union High School football program will begin on Aug. 19, with morning session beginning at 6:30 a.m. and the evening session at 4 p.m.
The Prospectors’ first game of the season will be on Friday, Sept. 6, at home against Nampa Christian.

Hilanders host wrestling camp Aug. 16-17
BURNS – The Burns Hilander 2002 3A state champion wrestling team and the High Desert Parks and Recreation Department will host a wrestling camp in Burns on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17.
There will be two sessions at the camp each day, the first one will be 9-11 a.m. and the second one will be 1-3 p.m.
Wrestlers of any age are welcome to attend; however, students under age 12 need an adult companion at the camp.
There will be a barbecue and swim on Friday evening for the wrestlers.
Les Gutches will teach the camp; he is a three-time high school state wrestling champion and two-time NCAA wrestling champion. He also is a former Olympian, World Cup Champion and World Champion. Gutches has competed nationally and internationally and has received many special awards as outstanding wrestler. He is currently an assistant wrestling coach for Oregon State University and instructs many summer clinics for youth wrestlers.
