VAUGHN ERNEST MICHAEL

Oct. 8, 1914 – Aug. 13, 2002

Vaughn Ernest Michael, age 87 of Bellingham, Wash., died Aug. 13 at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1914, in Garland, Wyo., to Stephen and Lora (Robbins) Michael.

During World War II, Mr. Michael served with the Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theater.

On July 9, 1943, he married Gladys Carter in Bellingham. They lived at John Day for 20 years, then they owned and operated Carter’s Grocery in Bellingham.

After retiring, they moved to Lopez Island for 22 years before returning again to Bellingham.

Mr. Michael is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Don Sanderson of Ukiah, Calif., and Lynn and Roger Iverson of Bellingham, Wash.; two grandchildren, Carla Iverson and Denny Iverson; nieces and nephews and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife on May 3, 2001.

ERNEST “ERNIE” HENSCHEL

Dec. 1, 1939 – Aug. 8, 2002

Ernest S. “Ernie” Henschel, 62, of Millersburg died Aug. 8 after an explosion at the mill on his farm.

Mr. Henschel was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Tillamook to Adolph and Hazel (Hubler) Henschel. He lived in Canyon City and Brookings as a child then moved to Albany, where he graduated from Albany High School in 1957.

As an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force, he was stationed at March Air Force Base in California. After his discharge, he returned to Millersburg to farm, and later became a partner and president of Mill Rite Farms.

He was raised in the Lutheran Church and served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He served as Millersburg Volunteer Fire Department fire chief for 20 years and was current chairman of the Heart of the Valley Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a member of the Albany Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Henschel is survived by his son, Brian of Albany; daughter Lauri Renshaw of Monroe; former wife, Sharon of Monroe; longtime companion, Darlene Simmons of Albany and her children; sister, Lucille Carson of Canyon City; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Bill and sisters, Pearl Baucum and Erma Brunson.

A Celebration of Life was held Aug. 15 at Millersberg City Hall.

ALAN DENNIS JOHNSON

March 31, 1941 – Aug. 6, 2002

Former John Day resident Alan Dennis Johnson, 61, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Aug. 6 at Duck Creek, Utah.

He was born March 31, 1941, to Merlin W. and Eva June (Cresap) Johnson at John Day, where he received his schooling and graduated from Grant Union High School in 1959.

He joined the United States Army in 1964 and was discharged in 1969 as a staff sergeant.

Mr. Johnson’s employment was as a construction project coordinator and facilities management at the University of Las Vegas. He retired in 1997.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

His first marriage was to Abigail Geary. In 1997, he married Juanita Sparks at Las Vegas, Nev.

He enjoyed piloting airplanes, fishing and returning to Eastern Oregon.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife Juanita of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Alan D. Johnson of Las Vegas; daughter, Carla Johnson of Las Vegas; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Earl and Lynn Nichols of Las Vegas and Paul Nichols of Las Vegas; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Anna and Steve Barret of Las Vegas; aunt and uncle, Betty and Bill Cresap of Washington; aunt Grace Arms of Milwaukie; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and aunt, Bonnie Sanders.

A graveside service officiated by Pastor Denny Diezel was held Aug. 19 at Canyon City Cemetery.

DAVID VINCENT ESKRIDGE

Nov. 6, 1917 – Aug. 14, 2002

David Vincent Eskridge, 84, of Hillsboro, died August 14 at his retirement home.

He was born on Nov. 6, l917, in Portland and spent his youth in Grays Harbor, Wash., Wyoming and Springfield, Ore.

During World War II he served in the United States Army and received the title of Staff Sergeant. He also received a Bronze Star for meritorious service in support of combatant operations in Belgium and Germany from November of 1944 to January of 1945.

In 1946 he married Mary Kay Johnson and from 1948-57 they lived in Prairie City, where he worked for the Grant County Road Department. In 1961 the family returned to the Portland area where he worked for the Lloyd Corporation until his retirement in 1980. He then he lived in West Linn, Manzanita, and Beaverton.

Mr. Eskridge is survived by his children Sally and Mike, and three grandchildren.

His wife preceded him in death in 1989.

A private service was held under the direction of Donelson, Sewell and Mathews Mortuary of Hillsboro.
