Kyler Deiter, Dominic DeHaven and Trevor Brown qualified for and competed at the meet.

DeHaven, wrestling at 100 pounds, had the most success at the meet. He lost his first match, but was able to recover and win his second before being eliminated in his third match. He placed ninth out of 16 wrestlers in his weight class.

DeHaven said he was happy with his performance.

“I feel good about the meet,” DeHaven said. “I wanted to get a top-10 finish. After losing the first one I just wanted to win a match, but then to still finish in the top 10 made me even happier.”

Brown, at 165 pounds, and Deiter, at 175, each dropped two straight matches in Woodburn.

Deiter said he enjoyed the meet despite the losses.

“I had fun,” Deiter said. “It was a good experience.”

The three wrestlers were able to score well enough for Mt. Vernon to place 54 out of 78 schools at the meet. They were competing against schools ranging from 2A to 6A. Mt. Vernon coach Pete Piazza said some schools had more than 10 kids competing at the state level.

“It’s been a fun season,” Piazza said. “We got kids to state and we were undefeated. It’s been a great year.”
