COQUILLE — Police arrested a 30-year-old Coquille man on animal abuse charges Tuesday morning after neighbors say he shot and killed their dog.

According to the Coquille Police Department, Jed Bradly Alexander was booked at the Coos County Jail for first-degree aggravated animal abuse, unlawful use of a weapon and seven counts of being a felon in possession of a weapon.

The log entry from the Coos Bay Police Department — which provides dispatch services for Coquille — also shows Alexander being charged with possession of more than an ounce of marijuana.

Police say Alexander was arrested after they arrived at his home in the 300 block of South Henry Street following the report of the shooting.

Officers found the dog dead in the yard from a large-caliber gunshot wound to the head.

The dog’s owners told police they had gone out drinking with Alexander, who had always allowed the dog at his home.

When questioned, the man told police that he knew he was in trouble, and couldn’t give a reason for his actions.

After he gave police permission to search his residence, officers discovered multiple firearms which Alexander — a convicted felon — is barred from possessing.

First-degree aggravated animal abuse and felon in possession of a firearm are both Class C felonies, carrying a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison on each count.
