Daniel Wallenmeyer passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Hawks Ridge in Hood River. He was 81.
He was born April 28, 1932 in Evansville, Ind., to Mindie (Madden) and William A. Wallenmeyer.
He grew up in Evansville, graduating from high school in 1949. After graduation, he joined the Air Force and served four years as a Crew Chief in the armament during the Korean War.
On July 18, 1954, he married Patricia Anne Fisher in Vancouver, Wash. He continued his education at Washington State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1959.
Mr. Wallenmeyer worked in the Goldendale and Yakima, Wash., areas and was the district conservationist for the USDA Soil and Water Conservation Service in Ritzville, Wash., and in Canyon City and McMinnville, in Oregon. He retired after 28 years.
During his career,he developed and implemented numerous soil and water conservation projects with farmers, ranchers, orchardists, and vineyard growers. He was a key participant in the Grant County Range Validation Program, numerous streambank and habitat protection projects, and in developing soil cover crops to prevent erosion in the newly established vineyard and winery industry in Yamhill County. He also was the weed control supervisor for Washington’s Skamania County for several years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, reading, his career and his family. He was devoted to his family, and was a member of the Lutheran Church in Stevenson, Wash.
Mr. Wallenmeyer is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Patricia; sons Jesse (Roxie) of Beaverton, and Lewis (Crystal) of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughters Patricia (Steve) McClelland of Cove, and Susan (Dean) Bowdish of Goldendale; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother George Wallenmeyer.
A celebration of life and mid-day potluck picnic will be held by family and friends on July 19 at the community park in North Bonneville, Wash.
