Greta Mae Carr

Greta Mae Carr, 82, died July 6 at Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day. A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on East Main Street in Long Creek. Ed Studtmann will officiate.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Rest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 201 Oak Grove Rd., NW, in Salem.

Mrs. Carr was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Long Beach, Calif., to Greta and Loyd Gulick. In 1952, she graduated from the University of Oregon in Eugene with a bachelors degree in music, and in 1969, earned a masters degree from Lewis and Clark College in Portland.

An accomplished violinist, Greta Mae began her teaching career in New York, and later taught instrumental music in the Salem public schools for 24 years.

She played in the Salem Symphony for many years, and gave private violin lessons. She was the choir director for the Keizer Christian Church for many years.

In 1989, she retired, with her husband, Clayton, at their ranch near Long Creek. Always a passionate musician, she participated in the Eastern Oregon Symphony. She also continued to give private violin lessons and initiated a program at Long Creek School.

She especially loved her life on the ranch, and sharing it with family and friends. She had a heart for animals, and enjoyed many dogs throughout her life.

She also enjoyed sewing, refinishing furniture, creative art projects and her involvement with the Long Creek Home Extension group.

Survivors include her husband, Clayton Carr; daughters, Karen (Eckart) Hass, Diane Haff and Carla (Kelly) Wilson; son, Kendall Haff; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
