PORTLAND – Carter Ray Mooso, 18 months, of Hillsboro, died Feb. 19, 2010, at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.
A funeral service was held Feb. 27 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hillsboro, with Bishop Steve Page officiating.
A private graveside service was held March 1 in Lebanon, with a dedication of the grave performed by Carter’s great-grandfather Robert Eriksen.
He was born July 28, 2008, in John Day, to Erin Mooso and Ira Franklin.
At age eight months, he was diagnosed with a rare immune disease, severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome (SCID), and stayed at Doernbecher.
He received a bone marrow transplant in July 2008 and, after his health improved, lived in Hillsboro with family. A month and a half later, infections came back and he returned to Doernbecher.
He was a fighter who stayed happy through his illness. He enjoyed going for rides in his grandpa’s truck and playing with the family dog.
Survivors include his parents, Erin Mooso and Ira Franklin; grandparents, Karma and LaDall Mooso of Hillsboro; Marcia and Jerry Franklin of Prairie City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Lurlyn Eriksen.
Arrangements were under the care of Threadgill Memorial Services. Donations to the family may be made in Carter Mooso’s name at U.S. Bank.
Carter’s story was featured in the Jan. 20, 2010, issue of the Blue Mountain Eagle.
