JOHN DAY – A 17-year-old girl was arrested in John Day for filing a false report with the Burns Police Department. The Burns Police Department received a report on Dec. 4 of a young woman with a gunshot wound to her leg, and she was transported to a hospital in Burns.

The officers questioned the girl at the time of the shooting and it was conveyed to police officers that the wound was caused by another individual.

Due to inconsistencies in the victims original report, the individual was again questioned by officers from Burns Police Department, this time Dec. 14 in John Day, and it was discovered that the wound was self-inflicted.

At that time the girl was arrested and charged with initiating a false report, unlawful possession of a weapon, two counts of recklessly endangering another person and obstructing governmental administration.

Police declined to say what caliber the weapon was but the wound was determined to be not life-threatening. The girl was released to her parents pending further investigation.
