Doris Loudermilk, 93, John Day, died May 24, at Valley View Assisted Living Facility in John Day. A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Valley View, 112 N.W. Valley View Dr.
Mrs. Loudermilk was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Santa Rosa, Calif., to Thomas and Jennie Johnston. She attended high school in Ferndale, Calif., and beauty school in Santa Rosa.
In 1953, she married Benny Loudermilk in Petrolia, Calif. She spent her days doing ranch work, herding sheep on horseback and working at the Petrolia store.
She was one of the Mattole Valley’s all-time great horsewomen. She was an original “Rosie the Riveter,” working as a woman welder during World War II. She was an accomplished artist in pencil and pastel oils. She enjoyed photography and loved working in the flower beds with her husband.
She lived in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Anchorage, Alaska, before retiring in Petrolia.
Survivors include her sons, Jim (Colleen) Clark of Mt. Vernon, Jerry Clark of Reedsport and Joe (Karen) Loudermilk of San Bruno; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Benny Loudermilk and Tom Clark.
