Dorothy Laverne Cohoe Cates, 72, of John Day, died Jan. 27, 2010, at Blue Mountain Hospital. A memorial service was held Feb. 2 at Driskill Memorial Chapel with Pastor Andy Anderson officiating.

She was born Jan. 18, 1938, in Fox Valley, to Clay and Selma (Justice) Cohoe. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1956 and also attended Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

On Aug. 9, 1957, she married Jesse Cates in Carson City, Nev.

Mrs. Cates was an artist and nature photographer. She enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting and was a rock hound. In addition to raising a family, she was a champion bowler and a prize-winning painter.

She was also a trained professional in addiction counseling and was employed by Grant County Mental Health as a certified drug and alcohol counselor, retiring in 2000.

She also did volunteer work for the Center for Human Development. In addition to founding and directing the Art Annex art therapy program, she often drove clients of the center and others in need to appointments, court dates, etc.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse Cates of John Day; son, Jon (Lisa) Cates of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter, Tammy (Eric) Stotik of Portland; and a granddaughter, Adaline Marie Cates of Vancouver, Wash.
