Lady Pros continue dominant streak on the diamondThe Grant Union/Prairie City softball team saw their winning streak extend to nine games following a trio of blowout wins over the past week.
The Lady Prospectors played Elgin/Imbler on Tuesday, April 16, at the Seventh Street Sports Complex in John Day, defeating the Lady Huskies in a mercy rule decision after three innings of play.
The Lady Pros would take a 3-0 lead into the second inning, but then the floodgates opened. Halle Parsons blasted a three-run homer to give the girls a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second and Drew Williams, Lilly Rockhill, Skylar McKay and Addy Northway all added RBIs, increasing the Lady Pro lead to 10-0 headed into the third inning.
The Lady Huskies would put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the third, but an eight-run outburst capped by a Savannah Watterson grand slam was just too much for the Lady Huskies to recover from as the Lady Pros took the game 18-2 for their seventh win in a row.
The Lady Pros kept the momentum going against Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii on Saturday, April 20, winning both games of the doubleheader by a combined score of 39-3.
The first game against the Lady Rockets was a 19-0 victory that was stopped after four innings due to the mercy rule. The Lady Pros scored in all four innings, capping the game with a nine-run fourth to end the game early.
Reece Jacobs led the way for the Lady Pros offensively, ending the game 3-4 at the plate with a game-high six RBIs. Sivanna Hodge, Savannah Watterson and Halle Parsons all chipped in a pair of RBIs for the Lady Pros in game one.
Jacobs’ bat stayed hot through the second game of the doubleheader as she drove in five runs to help power the Lady Prospectors to a 20-3 win. The Lady Pros scored at least one run in every inning but the third, scoring eight runs in the fifth to bring the game to an early end.
Williams went 2-0 in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Pros during the week, Striking out a total of 16 batters in her two appearances while surrendering just two runs. Parsons picked up the win for the second game against Pilot Rock, striking out five batters while surrendering two runs in five innings of work.
The No. 1-ranked Lady Pros are now 13-1 on the season with a 5-0 record in league play. The ladies were scheduled to head to Elgin/Imbler on Tuesday, April 25, for a 5 p.m. matchup with the Lady Huskies.
The team will then host Heppner/Ione/Condon for a doubleheader on Friday, April 26. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
Prospector track teams compete in NyssaThe Grant Union boys and girls track teams participated in the Don Walker Invitational in Nyssa on Friday, April 19, with the girls placing ninth out of 21 teams and the boys not logging a team score.
Individually, Mallory Lusco had the highest finish of all Grant Union competitors, placing third in the discus with a throw of 107 feet, 4½ inches. Right behind Lusco was Morgan Walker, who placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 100 feet even.
The Prospectors had one more top four finisher in Allyson Moore, who placed fourth in the high jump with a distance of 4 feet, 6 inches. As a team, the Lady Pros recorded 36 team points, one behind eighth-place Burns’ 37 and a tick better than 10th place Ontario’s 34.
Tournament host Nyssa won the girls competition with 82.5 team points. Nyssa also won the boys competition, scoring 105 team points.
The Grant Union boys and girls track teams were scheduled to be in action next at the Ranchers Invitational in Crane on Tuesday, April 23, before heading to Elgin for the Husky Invite on Friday, April 26. Start times are 4 p.m. for the Ranchers Invitational and noon for the Huskies Invite.
Panthers run at EOUThe Prairie City boys and girls track and field teams competed in the Cove Charter School 1A/2A/3A Invitational at Eastern Oregon University on Saturday, April 20, with the boys coming away with a 15th place finish and the girls leaving in 18th place.
The Panthers had one top four finish at the meet, a second place effort by the boys 4×100 relay race. David Sharpe, Sawyer Quinton, Tucker Wright and Maison Teel finished with a time of 46.73 seconds, just over a second behind the first place Imbler team.
The boys finished with 11 team points, just ahead of Griswold’s 10.5 point 16th place finish. The girls scored two team points to tie with Mitchell/Spray/Wheeler.
Vale won the boys competition with 126 points, followed by second place Imbler with 87. The girls would see that result flipped as Imbler won the girls completion with 89 team points to hold off Vale, which finished second with 88 team points.
The Prairie City boys and girls track teams were slated to be in action next on Tuesday, April 26, at the Ranchers Invitational in Crane before making their way to the Husky Invite in Elgin on Friday, April 26.
Start times are 4 p.m. for the Ranchers Invitational and noon for the Husky Invite.
