Vikings rain on prospector parade

JOHN DAY -Grant Union looked to be in control Saturday night. Funny how quickly things change.

The Prospectors raced out early in game one to take the lead and scored the last six points of the game to stave off a Viking rally and win, 25-22. Game two was even more lopsided and the Grant Union girls closed it out, 25-18.

The Vikings were in no mood to roll over and give up as they stormed back to take control of the next two games, winning those 25-21 and 25-19.

The fifth game was a battle between two teams that were refusing to give an inch. Umatilla took control early and led 6-1. Grant Union reached deep and came back to tie it up, but once again the Vikings found the strength to pull away and won the final game, 15-13.

The game took it’s toll mentally and physically on both sides, but the pain was clearly evident on the faces of the Prospector girls. Disappointment flowed down the cheeks of more than a few Prospectors and even though it was Homecoming night they weren’t ready to celebrate.

Senior Kerry Randall commented about the loss later.

“It was hard on us, not winning that one. I’m not sure really what happened,” said Randall. “We just kind of let down at the end. We just kind of let our intensity down and Umatilla came back.”

The day was not a complete loss for the Prospectors as earlier they notched a convincing victory over Riverside in five games.

The Prospectors have another tough test ahead when they travel to Vale Thursday, at 4 p.m.
