Local track and field athletes launch to regional Junior Olympics

- Mason Morris practices at the long jump pit on Thursday at Grant Union Junior-Senior High School in John Day. Morris, who will be a Grant Union freshman in the fall, will compete at the July 5-8 Junior Olympic Region 13 Meet after placing first in the long jump and triple jump at a June 21-24 qualifying meet in Portland. Jordan Hall and Trinity Hutchison will also compete at the regional event.
Three local track and field athletes have qualified for the Junior Olympic regional meet.

The trio competed June 21-24 at the USA Track and Field Oregon Association Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships at Jesuit High School in Portland. The top eight athletes in each event qualified for the regional meet.
Mason Morris, who will be a Grant Union freshman this fall, placed first in both the triple jump and long jump to qualify for regionals.
Jordan Hall, who will be a Grant Union sophomore, qualified in the triple jump, placing first in the event. He also qualified in the 110-meter hurdles.

Trinity Hutchison, who will be a Grant Union senior, qualified in the triple jump and also competed in the long jump.
The athletes are coached by Sonna Smith, who is also head coach for Grant Union track and field.
The Junior Olympic Region 13 Meet will be held July 5-8 at Summit High School in Bend.
The top five athletes in each event at regionals advance to the National Junior Olympic Championships scheduled for July 23-29 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Trinity Hutchison: (17-18), fifth, triple jump, 33-5.25; ninth place, long jump, 15-5.75.
